What does hay cost in the Mid-Atlantic right now?
Fresh 1st cut squares run $3–9/bale farm-gate across New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware — cheapest in upstate New York and rural Pennsylvania, highest closer to the cities and on the New Jersey side. Feed stores run higher: The Mill in Bel Air, MD lists a 40 lb orchard-timothy bale at $13.99. 2nd cut is scarce until July and runs about $6–9.
Why does bale weight matter more than price?
Real June 2026 example from this board: two Pennsylvania sellers both ask $8/bale — but one states 40 lb bales (≈$400/ton) and another states 45 lb (≈$356/ton). Same sticker, and the lighter bale quietly costs about 12% more per ton you actually feed. Plenty of ads never state weight at all, so the gap can be far wider. When an ad doesn't state weight, that's the first question to ask.
Are large bales cheaper than small squares?
Sometimes, but not always — check the math. Verified large squares on this board run anywhere from $253/ton (a $95 Mount Joy, PA bale) to $625/ton (a $125 premium horse bale), while small squares cluster in the low $200s to $400s per ton. Each large bale weighs 400–750 lb: you need a tractor to move them and enough animals to eat through one before it spoils. Great for cattle and big barns; impractical for a two-horse setup.
Should I count delivery in the price?
Always compare delivered cost if you can't haul. A $3 field-pickup bale in the Mohawk Valley can lose to a $7 local delivered bale once you count the truck, trailer, and your Saturday — or win big if you're taking 200 bales. Several sellers here deliver for a flat fee or along regular routes; ask before you assume pickup is cheaper.
When is the best time to buy?
Right now, roughly. 1st cutting is coming off the fields (more than a dozen listings here are tagged 2026 crop, several baled within the past few weeks) and field prices are the year's lowest. Prices climb through fall and peak in late winter — buy as early as your storage allows.
