What does hay cost in the Midwest right now?
Farm-gate 1st-cut grass squares run about $3.50–8/bale across Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin — some of the most affordable horse hay anywhere in the country. Round bales run $30–85 for cattle and dairy hay, and big alfalfa or alfalfa-grass large squares run $70–125. 2nd cutting runs about $5–7.
Why is Midwest hay such a good value?
This is the Corn Belt and dairy country, so hay ground, balers, and buyers are everywhere — that competition keeps small-square prices among the lowest in the nation. It's also alfalfa country: dairy-quality alfalfa and alfalfa-grass mixes are common here, which you'll see in the larger squares and rounds.
Why does bale weight matter more than price?
A real example from this board: a $6 grass square at 45 lb works out to about $267/ton, while a $4 bulk square at the same weight is about $178/ton — and a $125 big alfalfa square at 800 lb is roughly $313/ton. The sticker alone won't tell you which is the better buy; weigh the bale and compare cost per ton.
Should I count delivery in the price?
Always compare delivered cost if you can't haul. Plenty of Midwest sellers deliver for a fee or along regular routes. A cheap field-pickup bale an hour away can lose to a local delivered bale once you count the truck, trailer, and your Saturday — or win big if you're taking a full semi load.
When is the best time to buy?
Right now, roughly. First cutting is coming off the fields (several listings here are 2026 crop) and field prices are the year's lowest. Many growers take two or three cuttings through summer; prices climb through fall and peak in late winter — buy as early as your storage allows.
