Straight answers from the verified board — what things cost, what to ask, and when to buy.
What does hay cost in the Upper South right now?
Farm-gate 1st-cut grass squares run about $5–9/bale across Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, with bulk lots in Kentucky's horse country as low as $2–3.50/bale. Round bales — the region's staple — run $30–55 for a 4×5 roll, climbing to $110–125 for premium organic or alfalfa rounds. Feed-store and retailer squares run far higher: a Maryville, TN retailer lists pure orchard grass at $19.99/bale and Western alfalfa at $48. 2nd cutting is scarcer and runs about $5–12.
Why are round bales such a big deal here?
More than half the priced listings on this board are round bales, because cattle and big-barn buyers dominate the Upper South. A 4×5 round at $40 that weighs about 900 lb works out to roughly $89/ton — a fraction of the ~$300/ton you'll pay for small squares — but each roll needs a tractor to move and enough animals to eat through it before it spoils. Great for cattle; impractical for a two-horse setup. Always ask the bale weight: many round ads quote a size (4×4, 4×5, 5×5) but not pounds, and that swings the real cost a lot.
Why does bale weight matter more than price?
A real example from this board: a Paris, KY horse-hay square sells for as little as $2/bale — but those are light ~28 lb 2-string bales, about $143/ton. A heavier $8 orchard-grass square at 50 lb works out to about $320/ton. The cheaper sticker can quietly cost more per ton you actually feed once you weigh the bale. When an ad doesn't state weight, that's the first question to ask.
Should I count delivery in the price?
Always compare delivered cost if you can't haul. Plenty of sellers here deliver for a fee or along regular routes — a Columbia, TN round is $35 at the farm but $42 delivered in Maury County; a Washburn, TN square is $5 picked up or $6 delivered. A cheap field-pickup bale an hour away can lose to a local delivered bale once you count the truck, trailer, and your Saturday — or win big if you're taking a full load.
When is the best time to buy?
Right now, roughly. First cutting is coming off the fields (several listings here are 2026 crop, baled within the past few weeks) and field prices are the year's lowest. Prices climb through fall and peak in late winter when supply is scarcest — buy as early as your storage allows.

A lot of Upper South hay trades through Facebook groups, Craigslist, and the state Department of Agriculture market bulletins (West Virginia's is the source for several listings here).
