Hay prices live in a dozen scattered places — farm websites, Craigslist, state directories, feed-store shelves, word of mouth. Unless you call around for an afternoon, you never really know whether the price in front of you is good, fair, or way over.
BaleWise gathers every hay price we can find across every region we cover onto one board, links each one to its live source, and does the math that actually matters: true cost per ton. A $7 bale that weighs 45 pounds is a better buy than a $6 bale that weighs 30 — the board makes that visible at a glance.
It's free, there's no sign-up, and buyers will never pay. That's the deal.
Every price earns its place.
- Every listing links to a live source. Click any row — you land on the seller's own website, ad, or directory entry. If we can't link it, it doesn't go on the board.
- Re-checked all season. Prices get re-verified several times a week during cutting season, and every row shows the date it was last checked.
- True $/ton, not sticker price. When a seller states bale weight we mark it exactly; when they don't, we estimate conservatively and say so. Light bales get flagged — that's where buyers get burned.
- Verdicts measured against your local market. "Good deal" means measurably under the market near you — computed from the board itself, never a made-up "going rate."
- Warnings stay on. Last year's crop, light bales, stored-outside rounds, "not horse quality" — if the ad says it or we spot it, it's labeled, not hidden.
- No pay-to-play. Sellers can't pay to rank higher, look better, or bury a warning. Claiming a listing is free and gets exactly two things: photos and same-day price updates.

BaleWise started in June 2026 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, with my wife's horses and their hay bill. She needed hay; I was determined to find her a better price on my own. I never could — prices were scattered across Craigslist ads, farm websites, and "call for price" voicemails, and there was no way to tell what a fair number even looked like. So I built the thing I'd been looking for: one board with every price on it.
We started with the sellers near home, and we're still growing — town by town, state by state.
BaleWise is independent and family-run. We're not owned by a feed company, a farm, or a marketplace.

Today BaleWise makes nothing — it's a public good while we earn the region's trust. If it ever does make money, it will come from optional tools for sellers — never from charging buyers, never from selling your information, and never, ever from sellers paying to rank higher. The board stays honest or it's worthless.
