Heavy 3-string alfalfa and grass small squares (~100 lb each) run about $9–19/bale farm-gate across the eight states — roughly $230–500/ton — with lighter mountain-meadow and grass squares from around $6. Big 3×4 large squares, the region's workhorse, run $100–200/bale ($200–500/ton), and round bales run $70–280. A lot of Western hay sells call-for-price by the ton or the load, so this board lists hundreds of named ranch sellers with a tap-to-call number alongside the priced ads.

Western hay is baled big: a standard alfalfa small square is a 3-string bale around 100–110 lb — more than double a typical Eastern 2-string. So a $14 Western bale (about $280/ton) can actually be cheaper per ton than an $8 Eastern bale at 45 lb (about $356/ton). Always compare cost per ton, not per bale — that's exactly what this board computes for you.

Irrigated alfalfa is the staple — Colorado's San Luis Valley, Idaho's Magic and Treasure Valleys, Utah's Cache Valley and Uintah Basin, Arizona's Buckeye and Yuma, New Mexico's Pecos Valley, and Nevada's Fallon and Lovelock all grow it, much of it for export. Up in the high country you'll find mountain-meadow grass, timothy, orchard, brome, teff, and grain or wheat hay. Certified weed-free hay (required on a lot of public and forest land) is common here — many sellers note it.

Always compare delivered cost if you can't haul. Many ranches out here sell by the squeeze or the semi-load and deliver for a per-mile fee, often with a minimum load of 5 tons or more. A cheap field-pickup bale an hour away can lose to a local delivered load once you count the truck, trailer, and your Saturday — or win big if you're taking a full load.

Irrigated alfalfa cuts three to five times from spring through fall here, so fresh hay comes off the fields in waves and supply is highest mid-season. Field prices are lowest then; they firm up over winter once cutting stops. Buy as early as your storage allows.
